Nic Salts

Nic salts, also known as salt nicotine e-liquids, are refillable liquids designed for low-wattage MTL vaping. These 10ml bottles use a salt-based nicotine rather than traditional freebase, which gives a softer throat feel and faster absorption. This means you'll get the same satisfaction without the harsh kick you'd get from freebase at the same strength.

Available in strengths of between 5mg and 20mg, and over 1,000 flavour options across fruit, menthol, dessert and tobacco.

Browse our salt nic range today and enjoy multi-buy deals across all leading brands, plus with orders over £20 you'll get free next-day delivery in the UK.

Nicotine Salts Explained

Nicotine salt e-liquids, commonly known as nic salts, use a different form of nicotine to standard freebase e-liquid. With salt-based nicotine, the nicotine (naturally found in tobacco leaves) is combined with organic acids to lower the pH of the liquid, which allows higher strengths such as 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg to be vaped more comfortably.

Most nic salts are blended to a 50/50 VG/PG ratio and are designed for use in pod kits and starter devices. They are intended to provide a nicotine experience that feels closer to smoking or disposable vapes, but in refillable systems where pods, coils, and bottles are replaced rather than discarded.

Nic salt e-liquids have become one of the most widely used e-liquid formats in the UK, particularly among smokers switching to vaping and users of refillable pod kits.

If you’re new to nic salts, our guide to nicotine types explains how salt and freebase nicotine differ in use and feel.

Nic Salts vs Freebase

Key Differences: Nic Salts vs Freebase Nicotine

Both nic salts and freebase e-liquids are effective, but they are designed for different vaping preferences.

  • Nicotine Salts: Known for their smooth inhale and fast nicotine absorption, nic salts deliver strong satisfaction in fewer puffs. They are commonly chosen by new vapers and those transitioning from smoking.
  • Freebase Nicotine: The traditional form of nicotine, freebase provides a more noticeable throat hit that can feel harsh at higher strengths. It is often preferred by vapers using lower nicotine levels or higher-powered devices.

Which devices work best with nic salts?

Nic salts are best suited to low-powered pod systems and mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices. These kits typically operate at lower wattages (around 10–20W) and use coils rated at 0.6Ω or higher, helping maintain smooth flavour delivery and comfortable nicotine intake.

Using nic salts in high-powered sub-ohm devices is generally not recommended. The combination of high nicotine strength and increased vapour production can feel too strong for most users. Sub-ohm kits are generally better paired with lower-strength freebase e-liquids such as 3mg or 6mg high-VG blends.

I’ve used nic salts since they first became popular in the UK and haven’t looked back. Freebase always tasted slightly harsh to me, whereas nic salts stay smooth and keep the flavour really clear, even at higher strengths.

Choosing the Right Strength in Nic Salts

Nic salt e-liquids are available in several strengths to suit different needs, most commonly 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg. The right strength depends on your previous smoking habits and how often you vape.

Here is a quick guide to nicotine strengths:

  • 20mg (2.0%): Best for heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes a day).
  • 15mg (1.5%): A balanced option for moderate to heavier smokers who want strong satisfaction without going straight to 20mg.
  • 10mg (1.0%): Ideal for moderate smokers (up to 15 cigarettes a day).
  • 5mg (0.5%): Perfect for light smokers and those looking to gradually reduce their nicotine intake.

If you are unsure where to start, many people choose 10mg or 20mg first, then adjust up or down after a bottle or two depending on how it feels. It is usually better to start a bit higher than too low, then step down once you are fully off cigarettes.

Bar salts sit within nic salts as a sub category. They use the same nic salt base but focus on flavours inspired by popular disposable vapes. These liquids are sold in 10ml bottles for use in refillable pod kits, offering a similar taste experience at a lower running cost and with less waste.
