How to Choose the Right VG/PG Ratio
The PG/VG ratio is the proportion of Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) in the bottle. This affects how much vapour the liquid produces and which device it’s suited to. The VG/PG ratio also plays a key role in determining flavour intensity and vapour production, with different blends offering varying levels of taste potency and cloud density.
When shopping for e-liquids, you’ll see ratios mentioned like 50PG/50VG or 70VG/30PG.
Vaping styles and which e-liquid to use
Different vape kits are built for different vaping styles. The style you use should match the liquid in your tank or pod.
Mouth to lung (MTL):
Mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping typically uses higher nicotine strengths and thinner vape liquids. MTL devices such as refillable pod kits and starter pens come with plus ohm coils, so work best with a 50/50 e-liquid or nicotine salt based juice. MTL style vaping gives a cigarette like inhale and a noticeable throat hit.
Restricted direct lung (RDL):
Mid range coils and lower wattage DTL kits can use either 50/50 or some high VG juices. They produce more vapour than classic MTL but still feel fairly tight on the draw.
Direct lung (DL or sub-ohm):
High powered kits with low resistance coils are designed for thicker, high VG e-liquid, usually in 3mg or 6mg strengths. This gives warm vapour and big clouds without overwhelming nicotine content.
If you are ever unsure, check the coil resistance and follow the guidance on this page. Pair MTL kits with thinner 50/50 or nic salts, and use high VG shortfills with sub-ohm devices.
